Network Object

Introduction

A network object in LoriotPro is the visual presentation of a logical IP network or subnetwork. A network or subnetwork is a group of hosts connected together and able to communicate. Each host has a unique IP address from this network and all have a common mask.  Hosts are able to communicate  with other hosts in the same Network directly but if they are in different network the communication is established through a router. IP Routers are the only way of interconnecting IP network or subnetwork.

For example, the 10.33.10.0 network with 255.255.255.0 mask defines a network; hosts addresses could range from 10.33.10.0 to 10.33.10.255. 

The host internal algorithm, used to check if an incoming packet is from a host of its network, is:

(IP@Host) AND (IP@masquenet) = IP@net

Example

10.33.10.130 AND 255.255.255.0  = 10.33.10.0

Remark: The Network container object are automatically created by the Discover process.The user could create Network object when a Discover process could not be run.

Manual insertion of a Network object

To insert a Newtork object in the Directory, select a container object in the Directory and call the network insertion function from one of the menu.

 Warning: A network object could not be created if the selected object is a host.

Example :

After you select the organization in the Directory select from the main menu.

Directory>Insert Object>Network

It is also possible to use the contextual menu of ‘Organization’ or the option  from the  ‘Workspace Tools Bar’.

The network insertion window is displayed after a warning. The warning notifies you that network parameters could be later modified by the Discover process.

Functions

Network Name

A network name.

Example : backbone

Network IP Address

The network IP address

Example: 20.10.0.0

Network IP Mask

The network mask

Example : 255.255.0.0

Network Type

The media type use in the network.

Example : Ethernet

Remark: LoriotPro uses this parameter to define the default network icon displayed in the graphical map.

Speed (Bits/s)

The speed of the media.

Example : 10000000 for Ethernet

Description

A network description

Example : Head of Network

The change Icon button allows you to select a customized icon instead of the default one.

Remark: This option is not available when you create the icon but only when you modify the network object properties.

To confirm your choices press the  OK button.

A new network is inserted in the Directory.


Network insertion

In our example the 20.10.0.0 network called backbone has been created but no host are currently attached to it. The new network appears in the graphical map but no link leaves the object because there is no router defined yet.

Network object property modification

To modify the network properties of an existing Network object, select it in the Directory or on a map and use the available menus.

From the contextual menu on the ‘Internetwork Map’ :

Select the object in the Directory with a left click and then from the main menu select: :

Select the object in the Directory with a left click and then from the Directory Tools Bar select the ‘Properties’ icon.


Access the Network properties from the Directory Tools Bar .
