Introduction to Quality Of Service with LoriotPro

To resume the objectives defined in the preceding chapter, LoriotPro should produce analysis reports on the service quality (QOS) on the criteria of availability and of performance of the services provided by the information system.  This system here, can be composed of networks and systems services, middleware services (base data, DNS, Directory, etc…) and of applications.

To evaluate the quality of each of these services LoriotPro must realize measures at regular intervals.  The frequency of these measures and their success rate will allow defining the rate of availability of the concerned service.  As well, the measures itself will provide a response time value of the service and consequently the performance criterion.

LoriotPro can therefore very simply, evaluate the availability of an application server for example, with the regular polling that it realizes by default.  In the classical operation of LoriotPro, the responses to the polling (Ping or SNMP) are used for the real time supervision only.  To verify the service quality and the SLA, the results of the polling will be stored in files and treated afterward by the SLA Report Center plugin or by scripts to establish the reports of QOS

Remark:  In the phase 1 of the solution (Version 5 of LoriotPro) the measure of quality of service is realized directly from the LoriotPro supervision station.  As this solution does not use distributed software agents, the evaluation of availability and performance of services will be incomplete.  In a second phase the measures will be realized from LoriotPro distributed software agents to have a complete vision of the quality of service offered to the users of the information system.

The LoriotPro solution for the establishment of the reports of quality of service of the information systems is made up of several software components.

We define two main groups:

The components performing  the measures: LoriotPro polling process is in charge of the gathering of the values of measure of QOS.  For every host declared in the directory of LoriotPro it is possible to activate the SLA collection on both criteria of availability and of performance.

The collection consists therefore to measure availability and performance:

The measure of performance is based only on the round trip time realized by the upper requests.

The components performing the data analysis and the creation of QOS report:  The analysis of the collected data can be realized from the graphical interface of LoriotPro with the SLA Report Center plugin or by the functions of dedicated scripts.

In the next chapter we will see how to activate SLA data collection for a host and how to use the SLA Report Center to create QOS Report.
