How to set snmp polling and ping polling strategies
Introduction to snmp polling and ping polling
The main goal of a snmp polling and
ping polling process is to check permanently the presence of
host and their current
status. This task is performed by a regular polling to the selected
hosts included in the LoriotPro directory. Which host to poll
and
the way of doing it, is called the polling strategy.
LoriotPro offers different snmp polling and ping polling strategies.
All of the polling parameters are available in the host properties
menu
option.
You
can consult our on-line documentation for more information on
the polling
process
and the host
property page
Setting the snmp Polling strategy
The easiest way to select
a host is in the directory workspace by calling the host contextual
menu. In this example the 'Default Gateway' properties is
selected and by a right click in the workspace the contextual menu
is displayed.

The Loriot Host Setup module content all the
standard host parameters.

The 'host polling parameters' area contains the
following options.

| Parameters |
Usages |
| Polling in secondes |
The time between two polling
in secondes |
| Snmp Polling |
If checked = Snmp polling using
the Snmp profil parameters of the Host (snmp V1, V2c or V3) |
| Ping Polling |
If checked
= Ping polling
If 'Snmp Polling' and 'Ping polling' are checked, only the
'Snmp polling' is performed. In the case of the 'Snmp Polling'
fails, the Ping polling is performed.
If 'Snmp polling' and 'Ping Polling' are not checked, the
status color of the host is magenta. |
| Polled if Actif |
If an IP address is defined
here, the polling of this host is performed only if the IP
address defined has the actif status (blue=1
or green=2). This mandatory IP address must pertain to a host
already defined in the LoriotPro Directory . When the polling
process starts or stops to poll a host, an event is sent to
the LoriotPro event manager. (see the event.txt file).
Events sent to events manager:
102 "Host is polled"
103 "Host is not polled"
This function is useful when you want to monitor a goup
of hosts located on a remote site behind a router. You stop
the polling to these hosts if the router is down avoiding
a bunch of unwanted alarm in the event manager. A soon as
the router is up again the polling restarts. |
| Polled If no Actif |
If an IP address
is defined here, the polling of this host is performed only
if the IP address defined has the no actif status
(yellow=3 or red=4). This mandatory IP address must pertain
to a host already defined in the LoriotPro Directory . When
the polling process starts or stops to poll a host, an event
is sent to the LoriotPro event manager. (see the event.txt
file).
Events sent to events manager:
102 "Host is polled"
103 "Host is not polled"
This function is useful when you want to start the polling
of a backup line interface (like ISDN line) when the permanent
line is down. |
Load Polling Script
Gen Html
Gen Csv |
If you select
the 'snmp polling' LoriotPro checks the SNMP connectivity
by performing aSNMP GET on the sysname OID of the polled
host . With this option, it is possible to gather other
ODI values
during the SNMP polling and save them to a CSV and/or HTML
file. The generated file is saved in a bin/tmp/log directory
and the file name is called "poll_xx.xx.xx.xx_month_day_year.csv"
or/and "poll_xx.xx.xx.xx_month_day_year.html".
Where xx_xx_xx_xx is the IP address of the polled host. A
new file name is created each 24 hours.
The script file is generated with the scripter module (Menu>Tools>MIB
Scripter), the script file has the *.sci extention. LoriotPro
supports the polling of 25 OID maximum by SNMP packet.

Host Color Status :
The same host status colors are used in all
modules of LoriotPro. When the status of a host changes, the
color associated to this host changes everywhere in the active windows
(MAP, Directory, Health Control Center)
| Colors |
Status |
| Magenta |
No polling |
| Bleue |
Ping polling
succeeded |
| Green |
SNMP polling
succeeded |
| Yellow |
Ping or Snmp
Polling start to fail (two requests without response) |
| Red |
Ping or Snmp
Polling fail (more than three requests without response) |
Monitor the snmp polling and ping polling
The Polling Proccess can be monitor with the
Poller Console (Menu>monitor>Poller Console).

| Parameters |
Usages |
| Start / Stop |
Stop or
start all ping and snmp polling to all configured hosts

If you define
a syslog server address here, check 'send to syslog' and checked
the 'status check box' a syslog message will be sent each
time that a host status will change. |
| Winsock2 Ping Polling |
if Checked, authorize the

= When the status of a host changes, an event is sent to the
event manager module (see events.txt file)
